We’re so busy these days, but I ordered two books in May because I’d have Mother’s Day and my birthday (I turned 27!) to read them. I was so excited and had heard great things about them, but was majorly disappointed.
And I’m not a snobby reader. I majored in English and I love Shakespeare and Steinbeck, but I also devoured Jenny Han’s “To All the Boys I Loved Before” series and the Sweet Magnolias books. I’m currently reading John Cleese’s autobiography “So Anyway.” I promise I’m not too picky with my fun books, as long as it’s entertaining.
The First Bridgerton Book: “The Duke and I”
I didn’t love this. It’s not like the show at all. There are no real stakes, and the narration ventures into both Daphne and Simon’s heads which is a poor decision for a romance novel. There’s very little other drama besides the main love story. The show made dozens of small tweaks that had a huge impact on the story.

A Court of Thorns and Roses
I really wanted this to be good. I had seen everyone carrying it around. It has a cult following. I was expecting something akin to spicy Harry Potter or the Selection Series, or anything resembling a cohesive story. I wanted a swoon-worthy romance.
It barely made sense. The main character spends more time joking around with her love interest’s best friend, who is supposed to hate her. The “plot twists” aren’t plot twists, the author just repeatedly lied to you. The main character is “tough” instead of having a personality.
