The Tulip Barn in Hillegom, Netherlands

As a photographer in the Netherlands, finding the perfect location for a photoshoot can be difficult. There’s lighting and rain to think about, then there’s accessibility and access to bathrooms to think about. I can’t have a family photoshoot in the middle of a field, where the nearest public bathroom is an hour away. So, you can imagine how much I love the Tulip Barn.

The Tulip Barn is just a hop, skip, and a little walk away from Amsterdam. You can take the train from Amsterdam Centraal with one transfer. Once you get to the Hillegom station, you can walk fifteen to twenty minutes to The Tulip Barn, or you can call an Uber (or Bolt, the Dutch equivalent).

Once you get to the Tulip Barn, you can scan your ticket and go directly inside the fields, or you can grab a snack inside. I do a lot of sessions here in April, and I really love arriving an hour early and just having a snack and a quiet moment before starting a photoshoot. And sunset gets later and later in the Spring, so we aren’t rushing to beat sunset.

You can also pick up some tulip-themed souvenirs at their gift shop! They have everything from t-shirts to real tulips and even Amsterdam glass houses.

There are also food trucks selling fries, sandwiches, and hot chocolate outside, as well as different play areas set up for children. There are also a lot of things for kids to do in the fields themselves. I encourage you to run and play during your session with me! For more info about my tulip sessions, click here.

Sunset Sessions

Last year, the Tulip Barn stayed open later on Friday evenings, so we could get sunset photos in the tulip fields!

Sim Sawyers

Amsterdam baby photographer

I’m a wife, mom, artist, and incessant daydreamer. Ill-advised baking challenges are my favorite things to tackle on a Sunday morning, and I truly think pastries are best enjoyed warm, sitting on the floor by the oven.
Seeing and appreciating motherhood for the emotional and physical work it is is the "why" behind Sim Sawyers Photography, and I hope you'll invite me to document yours.
